Last week we stated that the 20th President of the United States was also the youngest major general in the Union Army. Some may have wondered whether that is true. Wasn’t George Armstrong Custer the youngest Northern general? Yes.

Custer was a brigadier general and was the youngest Northern general overall. The man who became 20th President of the United States was the youngest major general for the North. In case you are wondering, his name is James A. Garfield.
