It Is Doubly True

June 2, 2015

Buchanan was out, and Johnson came to occupy the office Buchanan once held. Johnson was chosen because he strongly supported Administration policy regarding the national emergency. When it became Johnson’s turn to lead the nation, he would build on this foundation.

It is certainly true that President Buchanan was out of office when Andrew Johnson became Lincoln’s second term Vice President. It is certainly true that Andrew Johnson was chosen because he strongly supported Lincoln’s first term policies. It is certainly true that Andrew Johnson tried to build on Lincoln’s foundation. But the narrative in the first paragraph can be viewed another way.

Representative James P. Buchanan died in 1937. His successor was chosen by the people because he strongly supported President Roosevelt’s New Deal, and when he became President in the mid-1960’s, Lyndon Johnson would build on FDR’s foundation.
