The Citizen President

April 13, 2015

April 13 is the birthday of a famous American President. His likeness is stamped on the nickel, framed on the two-dollar bill, and carved on Mount Rushmore. Along with Presidents Washington and Lincoln he is prominently memorialized in the nation’s capital.

He wrote the nation’s founding document, became its first Secretary of State, its second Vice President, and its third Chief Executive. As President he employed diplomacy to double the land area of the United States.

His tombstone does not mention any of his political offices. Shortly before leaving the Presidency he remarked: “Never did a prisoner released from his chains feel such relief as I shall on shaking off the shackles of power.” That’s just how Thomas Jefferson was.
