A Saint Patrick’s Day Wedding

March 17, 2015

No groom should receive more attention than his bride on their wedding day, but on this occasion he was nearly invisible.  Because the bride’s parents had both died when she was a child, her famous uncle would be giving her away.  He would likely be the focus of attention despite his best efforts to honor his favorite niece.  The groom did not mind because he was a great admirer of his future uncle-in-law.

The wedding date was selected in order to accommodate the bride’s uncle.  He had a very tight schedule, and he was going to be in town that day for another purpose.

On March 17, 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt gave his niece away to his fifth cousin.  The couple would be married more than 40 years and have six children, five of whom would live to adulthood.  The couple would also have four inaugurations as President and First Lady.
