Where Have We Heard This Before?

July 9, 2014

Thomas Jefferson wrote the initial draft of the Declaration of Independence. This document contains a list of grievances which prove the British monarch was a tyrant: “Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us,” “cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world,” and “imposing taxes on us without our Consent.”

These exact phrases and others from the founding document had already been used by Jefferson for another writing assignment. Many in the Continental Congress probably knew Jefferson had repeated himself, but they did not mind. At least he wasn’t trying to hide the facts from anyone.
