Christmas with the Methodys

December 18, 2013

Franklin Roosevelt was a communicant of the Episcopal Church and attended services at St. John’s in Washington, D.C., but he often visited large Baptist or Methodist churches during the Christmas season.  Someone once rebuked him for this, but he brushed them off by saying:  “What’s the matter?  I like to sing hymns with the Methodys.”

One year he took British Prime Minister Winston Churchill with him.  Churchill was high church, but that didn’t matter to FDR.  The President simply stated: “It is good for Winston to sing hymns with the Methodys.”
