What JFK Never Had a Chance to Say

November 25, 2013

President Kennedy was assassinated by a Communist who had at one time renounced his citizenship to live in Russia.  The President was scheduled to speak the day he was killed.  Below are a few sentences from his undelivered speech.  The reader will observe that President Kennedy, in a single paragraph, quotes from both the Old and New Testaments of the Holy Bible.  The first quotation is from Luke 2:14 and the final sentence is from Psalm 127:1.

“We in this country, in this generation, are, by destiny rather than choice, the watchmen on the walls of world freedom.  We ask, therefore, that we may we worthy of our power and responsibility, that we may exercise our strength with wisdom and restraint, and that we may achieve in our time and for all time the ancient vision of ‘peace of earth, good will toward men.’  That must always be our goal – and the righteousness of our cause must always underlie our strength.  For as was written long ago: ‘Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.'”
