Captain Herndon

October 30, 2013

It has been said that Captain William Lewis Herndon stood in the wheelhouse of the S.S. Central America in full dress awaiting his demise.  He had already put the women and children into lifeboats and given his watch to someone he hoped would deliver it to his wife.  He became the archetype for a captain going down with the ship.

Two years later his daughter married the man who would become the 21st President of the United States.  Chester A. Arthur was the first of four Presidents who would build up the United States Navy.

At Annapolis there is a monument to Arthur’s brave father-in-law.
