The Garfield Monument

July 20, 2013

The James A. Garfield Monument in Lakeview Cemetery, Cleveland, is a circular tower 50 feet in diameter and 180 feet high.  In the Memorial Hall is a 12 foot statue of Garfield as a Congressman.  The sculpture even includes an exact replica of his chair and depicts him as just having risen to address the assembly.

Below the Memorial Hall is the crypt which houses Garfield’s flag draped coffin, the coffin of his wife Lucretia, and the ashes of his daughter and son-in-law.

The Garfield Monument is larger than that of Lincoln’s in Springfield and much taller than the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C.  It contains 14 stained glass windows and five bas relief panels containing 100 life-size figures which explain the life and death of our 20th President.
