Elder Ball

May 12, 2013

George H. Ball was a 19th century Baptist minister who took a great interest in the education of former slaves.  However, it takes a little effort to uncover his good deeds.  When future President James Garfield was a student at Geauga Seminary, he wrote some very critical words in his diary regarding Elder Ball’s preaching.  After James Garfield passed into history as the assassinated 20th President, Elder Ball made the headlines with his negative comments on candidate Grover Cleveland.  Most of us will never become President, but we should be careful what we say during our fifteen minutes of fame.
